OPT, H1B not under threat
The Story
US senators urge Trump to stop non-essential migrant workers for next 60 days
What happened
4 US senators urged President Donald Trump to suspend all new guest worker visas for sixty days, and to suspend certain categories of new guest worker visas (OPT, H1B, H2B, EB5 etc) for at least the next year, or until unemployment has returned to normal levels.
Why suspend skilled migration
The US senators seek to protect jobs for these Americans who have been affected by unemployment during the current COVID-19 crisis.
33 million have already filed for unemployment coverage. a stunning difference from a 45 year historic low unemployment rate of 3.5% in February of this year.
But skilled migrants are job creators…..
Skilled migrants predominantly work in the STEM industry. And STEM employment directly contributes to 4.3 jobs in local goods and services industries across all income groups, including lawyers, dentists, schoolteachers, cooks and retail clerks.
There is no reason to worry
This is just a letter to President Donald Trump. There has been no legislative or executive action. Trump administration has not made any plans to extend his current executive order affecting potential immigrants to guest workers.
Moreover, according to a study by Deloitte, US has shortage of 1 million skilled STEM workforce majority of which is met by international talent. For tech industry (that creates jobs) to function and grow, US needs STEM migrants.
